HOST EVENTS AT REFETTORIO GASTROMOTIVA

Our building is equipped with three beautiful hybrid spaces available to accommodate anyone. Our principle dining area can comfortably accommodate 72 people at tables designed by the Campanas Brothers, or, if you wish, you can transform the space into a dance floor for at least 100 people. Our professional kitchen is equipped to handle whatever is demanded and our multipurpose amphitheater, behind our kitchen, is equipped with a projector that can host a workshop or Gastronomy class. Of course, you can’t forget about our beautiful outdoor terrace!

While one third of food produced in the world is wasted, millions of people stay hungry everyday and live in constant food insecurity. Refettorio Gastromotiva is an initiative brought to Brazil by chefs Massimo Bottura (Food for Soul), David Hertz (Gastromotiva) and by the journalist Ale Forbes to contribute to fighting food waste, malnutrition and social exclusion. Refettorio - in latin Reficere - means recuperate and restore. At the Refettorio Gastromotiva recuperating food is just as important as promoting and restoring the dignity of people.

Refettorio Gastromotiva brings nourishment, culture and dignity for all, in a place full of art and culture. Launched during the 2016 Olympic Games, it became a human legacy for the city. It works as a food waste restaurant-school with invited guest chefs and young talents from Gastromotiva cooking with surplus ingredients every day. We offer free dinner for 90 people in socially vulnerable situation and also offer a vocational kitchen training with an emphasis on Social Gastronomy for underprivileged youngsters.

You can experience Social Gastronomy in three different ways at Refettorio Gastromotiva.

1) In partnership with AirBnB Experience we offer 'A feast for Soul' (Link). A unique opportunity to cook and learn with our chef and kitchen staff, rescue food, transform it to delicious meals and serve with love and dignity.

2) Volunteer and make the invisible, visible again. You can apply here (bit.ly/voluntariorefettoriogastromotiva) to enrol (the waiting list is taking an average of 2 months) or, with your friends and colleagues, you can book an exclusive day and sponsor the dinner for our socially vulnerable guests. If you are a chef and wants to cook for one night and share your knowledge with our students and cooks, write to samantha@gastromotiva.org with your CV attached. 

3) Bring your events to our beautiful space, enjoy our delicious, fine food and service.

Social and Environmental Impact

Nourishment and dignity

We prepare healthy, seasonal and delicious meals for individuals living in social vulnerability in Lapa, Rio de Janeiro.

Reducing food waste

We cook with surplus ingredients, that are still good for consumption, and that would otherwise been discarded.

Empowering the youth

Our staff consists of young gastronomic talents from underprivileged communities in Rio de Janeiro, who graduated one of the Gastromotiva programs.

Education and health

We run as a HUB for Social Gastronomy, offering lectures and workshops to encourage healthy and sustainable habits and customs.

Urban Development

Raise awareness of all volunteer, students, cooks and chefs that come to serve and foster the involvement of the neighbourhood entrepreneurial community

A partnership amongst many good people

In the space provided by the Rio de Janeiro's City Hall, we built the Refettorio Gastromotiva with the support of dozens of organizations and hundreds of individuals - a true multi-stakeholder effort.

 

The Artists

To fulfill the dream of building this project from scratch, Vik Muniz, the art curator, the Campana Brothers and Maneco Quinderé, volunteered to design the scenography and furniture. The architectural project is developed by Gustavo Cedroni of METRO Architects. These internationally recognized professionals collaborate with us as they believe in the power of food and gastronomy to transform lives and social realities.

The Chefs

More than 130 chefs and sous-chefs from Brazil and around the world came to cook during the first phase of implementation of Refettorio Gastromotiva. They shared meals and knowledge to fight waste and strengthen the Global Social Gastronomy Movement. Each week new chefs are invited to share their spices and flavours.
